Meet Sarah Tayler – Expert Audiologist in Plymouth

With a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades, Sarah Tayler brings unmatched knowledge and hands-on expertise to earwax removal and audiology services in Plymouth. From her early beginnings in the UK to her leadership roles in both the NHS and abroad, Sarah has developed a deep, specialist focus in microsuction earwax removal—a safe and highly effective technique she now offers at Healthy Ears Plymouth. Her commitment to clinical excellence and training has helped shape modern audiology practices, making her one of the most respected audiologists in the field. Here’s a closer look at her journey and contributions to hearing health:

Early Career

I began my career as a student audiologist in 1986 in the UK and qualified in 1988. Just a few years later, in 1991, I was promoted to Senior Audiologist, with a focus on earwax removal via microsuction.

During this time, I also started specialist training in Paediatric Audiology at the prestigious Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Advancing Specialties

My professional path led me to specialize in advanced audiometry, including:

  • Brainstem and Cortical assessments

  • Evaluations for legal cases involving non-organic (feigned) hearing loss

Following further promotion to Chief Audiologist, I played a key role in:

  • Introducing digital hearing aids to the NHS

  • Training other audiologists in digital hearing aid programming

Specialization in Earwax Removal

Throughout my career, I became one of the few audiologists with a deep focus on earwax removal. My work in this field included:

  • Creating a training program for UK practice nurses and health visitors on safe ear syringing

  • Later expanding training to include microsuction techniques for medical staff

Contributions in New Zealand

Upon relocating to New Zealand, I continued this work by:

  • Teaching doctors and nurses how to perform microsuction safely and effectively

  • Developing a set of clinical ear care standards and protocols, now widely adopted by GP practices across New Zealand
